The Fortress of Bastille was erected in the end of the XIV century and for hundreds of years it was remaining one of the strongest and most significant fortifications in Paris. It protected the city from enemies and served as a safe-haven for kings and as a prison for upper-class inmates. In the XVIII century alone, the list of its prisoners included Voltaire, de Beaumarchais and Marquis de Sade, among others. The Fortress gained a special significance for the history of France in 1789, when rebellious Parisians stormed the Bastille – a hateful symbol of the royal tyranny. This event is considered to be the beginning of the Great French Revolution, and now we think of it as a symbol of freedom.
